The Macleans College B team were on form at the Puhinui Secondary Schools Eventers Challenge, picking up an individual second and overall team first. The event was run as a derby, and was a great test of riders adaptability in the ring. Competitors had to jump a mixture of cross-country and show jumping fences within the optimum time. Zalia Tornquist, from the winning Macleans B team said, “It was a lovely flowing course, and the horses could really get a nice rhythm. This year was great with some challenging jumps which we had to ride well but could still have fun at the same time.”

For its second year, the eventers challenge was conducted alongside the Puhinui International Three Day Event and attracted schools from around Auckland. Having three classes, 65cm, 80cm and 95cm, meant that there was a class for everyone, and that less experienced riders could still enjoy being part of a team. The atmosphere was so supportive as teammates were helping each other and cheering each other on.

After the first round, the top three scores from each team would be counted, and the winning team chosen from there. For the 95cm and 80cm combined team, Rangitoto College 1 scored the win with a seventh and two seconds. Northcote College won the 65cm competition with individual first and third placings. And for the 90cm, 80cm and 65cm combined team, Rosehill College came first followed closely by ACG Strathallan.

Thank you to all the event organisers for putting on a very well-run show. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to be back next year!
