And that’s a wrap from the Burgham International Horse Trials where Brit Oliver Townend set a world record for winning the highest number of international eventing class at a single event in the modern era.
He headed home with wins in the CCI4*-S aboard Ballaghmor Class (24.2 penalty points), the CCI3*-S on Andrew Nicholson’s former ride Cillnabradden Evo (26.7), the CCI3*-S on Miss Cooley (26.1) and the CCI2*-S with Cooley Rosalent (24.7).
It was massive weekend for the event – the first international for the season – with huge entries but no spectators allowed on site.
There was a big contingent of Kiwi eventers who made the most of getting out and about in the competitive arena once again. By all accounts, they were generally happy with their horses and results given the challenges 2020 has presented everyone.
Ginny Thompson (pictured) and Khaleesi II (owned by David & Karie Thomson) finished in 36th spot in the CCI2*-S (section P) on 45.4 penalty points. The combination has only competed together since July, with four novice under their belts before their first international 2* this weekend. They added only time penalties to their dressage score at Burgham. The class was won by the unstoppable Oliver Townend.
